7 Essential Tips for Finding Free Parking in Gatlinburg
Published Dec 8, 2024With entertainment, attractions, shops and food, Gatlinburg is a delightful place to visit – and a challenging place to park. Here’s how savvy travelers can find free parking in this bustling downtown.
1. Arrive early.
The earlier you’re downtown, the better your chances of nabbing a spot. Bonus: Have a hearty Southern breakfast at one of Gatlinburg’s pancake houses before attractions open!
2. Visit during the “off seasons.”
Although Gatlinburg is popular year-round, fewer tourists visit between January and May. A briefer dip in tourist numbers happens around September. Parking is easier in the less crowded off seasons.
3. Park on River Road.
A one-mile stretch of River Road offers free street parking. The walk from River Road parking to the Parkway is only one block, making this a great no-cost option for exploring downtown.
4. Use Free Park and Ride Lots.
The city provides two free lots where you can leave your car and ride the free Gatlinburg Trolley to downtown. These lots are open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. every day except Christmas Day. The Trolley’s closing times vary seasonally. If you plan to spend the evening in Gatlinburg, be sure to check the time for the last Trolley heading back to your park and ride lot.
Here’s where you’ll find the park and ride lots:
- City Hall Park and Ride: On Highway 321, with 95 spaces.
- Welcome Center Park and Ride: On “The Spur” (Route 441), with 145 spaces.
5. Use the City’s Online Parking Information.
Gatlinburg provides real-time parking information, plus maps and directions, at the site linked here. Stay informed so you don’t waste time heading for parking that’s already full.
6. Park at Local Businesses You’re Visiting.
Some businesses have lots for customers. Before you set out, check whether your destination has dedicated parking. Please be polite (and avoid getting towed): Never leave your car in a business’s parking lot while you go to other attractions or shops.
7. Try Low-Cost (But Short-Term) Street Parking.
No spaces left on River Road? Other on-street parking costs between $1 and $2 an hour and is limited to two- to four-hour stays. If you don’t want to move your car frequently, consider splashing out for a garage or private lot space.
The closer you stay to downtown Gatlinburg, the less time you’ll spend driving and parking. That means more time to spend having fun! Reserve a Gatlinburg vacation cabin now.
