What to Do with Your Dog in the Smokies
The Smoky Mountains area is genuinely one of the best regions in the Southeast for traveling with a dog. Here's where to take yours:
Hiking trails that allow dogs: Dogs on leash are welcome on two trails within Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the Gatlinburg Trail (a flat, 2-mile roundtrip along the Little Pigeon River, ideal for all fitness levels) and the Oconaluftee River Trail near Cherokee. Outside the national park, dogs are welcome on most trails in the Nantahala and Cherokee National Forests, including many popular routes accessed from the Smokies area.
Outdoor spaces: Picnic areas within Great Smoky Mountains National Park allow leashed dogs, making spots like Metcalf Bottoms and Elkmont great options for a relaxing afternoon with your pet. The Greenbrier area also has roadside creek access where dogs love to splash around.
Downtown and around town: Many shops along the Gatlinburg Parkway are dog-friendly, and several outdoor seating areas at local restaurants welcome leashed pets. Pigeon Forge's Patriot Park has open lawn space and is a popular spot for dogs and their people.
Pet Friendly Cabin Amenities Worth Seeking Out
- Ground-level or single-story layout — easier on older dogs or large breeds navigating stairs
- Cabins on the river — many dogs love creek and river access right from the property
- Deck or covered porch — outdoor hang space for you and your dog between adventures
- Mountain views — because your dog will absolutely appreciate the fresh air on a mountain-view deck
- Private hot tub — for you after a long day on the trails; your dog will be fine on the deck
What to Pack for Your Dog
Traveling with a dog to a mountain cabin is easier than it sounds. A quick packing list:
- Food and collapsible travel bowls
- Leash, harness, and a backup leash (trails can be muddy)
- Dog bed or a familiar blanket to help them settle in
- Waste bags — pack more than you think you'll need
- Towels for post-hike or post-creek cleanup (mountain paws are muddy paws)
- Any medications, flea/tick prevention — tick season in the Smokies runs most of the year
- A recent photo of your dog in case they get loose in an unfamiliar area
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a pet fee, and is it refundable? There is a non-refundable pet fee of $50 per pet. This fee covers additional cleaning associated with pet stays.
Can I bring my dog to Great Smoky Mountains National Park? Dogs are permitted in the national park but with restrictions. They're allowed in picnic areas, campgrounds, and along two specific trails: the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail. Dogs are not allowed on other park trails, in backcountry areas, or in park buildings. Always keep your dog on a leash of 6 feet or shorter within the park.
Are there weight limits on dogs? Weight limits vary by property. Many of our pet friendly cabins have no weight restrictions, while others may limit pets to under 25 lbs. Check individual listings or contact us to confirm.
Do I need to notify you that I'm bringing a dog? Yes — please let us know at the time of booking. Not every cabin in our full inventory is pet approved, and bringing an undisclosed pet may result in additional charges. We want to make sure you're set up in the right property from the start.
What happens if my dog damages the cabin? Pet-related damage beyond normal wear and tear is the responsibility of the reservation holder. We ask that guests clean up after their pets and prevent furniture damage where possible.
Are there pet friendly restaurants near the cabins? Yes — several restaurants in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge welcome leashed dogs on outdoor patios. The selection changes seasonally, so we recommend checking with individual restaurants on your trip. Gatlinburg's downtown area in particular has several dog-welcoming spots along and near the Parkway.
