Gatlinburg's 5 Best Birthday Activities for Kids

Gatlinburg's Best Birthday Activities for Kids

Gatlinburg is a great place to spend a birthday, especially if you’re a kid! There are many different excitement-packed attractions and activities for kids of all ages. From awe-inspiring aquariums that spark interest in the natural world to high-in-the-air sky parks that provide safe but exciting adrenaline rushes, here are 5 of the best birthday activities Gatlinburg has to offer.

1. Anakeesta

Anakeesta is a family destination and provides activities for all ages. There are dueling ziplines for the more adventurous and calm play areas for the littlest, as well as everything in between. If you’re inviting the whole family reunion along for the birthday fun, you may even qualify for special group pricing.

And when all the excitement has hit its peak and the kiddos start to crash, there are relaxing gardens and cozy seating areas where you can decompress and enjoy the view.

2. The Gatlinburg SkyPark

The Gatlinburg SkyLift Park is a great way to soak in a gorgeous view and get some of that fresh mountain air, but the kids will probably be most interested in their SkyBridge. They may not care that it’s the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America, but they’ll certainly marvel at the sheer altitude and have a great time dashing along the enormous walkway.

3. Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies

Sharks, stingrays and eels, oh my! There’s a lot of dazzling aquatic life to see here and lots of fun merchandise to buy. There are learning opportunities as well, and kids (and their parents!) get to meet some of the animals up close, like the sting rays at Touch a Ray Bay.

Want to really treat the birthday girl or boy? There’s an option here for a full party itinerary that culminates in a sleepover party in the shark room!

4. Gatlinburg Mountain Coaster

Roller coasters are everywhere, but mountain coasters are where the excitement is really at! Gatlinburg’s one-of-a-kind, family-friendly thrill ride lets you zip down the Smoky Mountains day or night! Plus you’ll get an exciting souvenir photo to commemorate your child’s most daring birthday adventure yet!

5. Gatlinburg Cabin Rental

Even kids need to unwind at the end of the day. Top off the day’s adventures by coming home to a relaxing cabin with a gorgeous Smoky Mountain view. Kids don’t calm down that easily? Check out our Gatlinburg cabins with pools, hot tubs and other fun amenities to keep the party going all night!

Gatlinburg doesn't do ordinary birthdays. Where else can a kid spend their special day walking a suspension bridge 500 feet in the air, sleeping overnight with sharks, mining for gemstones on a mountainside, and riding a gravity-powered coaster through the treetops — all in the same zip code?

Whether you're planning a full birthday trip to the Smokies or just looking for one unforgettable activity to anchor the day, here are the best birthday experiences for kids in Gatlinburg — with ages, prices, and tips for each one.

1. Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies — The Ultimate Birthday Party Venue

📍 88 River Rd, Gatlinburg | 🕐 Open daily

For the birthday activity that kids will genuinely talk about for years, nothing in Gatlinburg tops Ripley's Aquarium. Ripley's Aquarium lets you take your party under the sea — they provide everything you need to have a blast, including decorations, cake, juice, goody bags, a birthday gift for the child, and more.

They even have 5 different party themes to choose from: Mermaid, Ocean, Shark, Pirate, and Island. Ripley's takes care of all the planning so you can focus on having fun with your group.

And then there's the sleepover. Ripley's Aquarium offers overnight birthday parties in the shark tunnel — your child and their guests sleep directly beneath the shark tank, surrounded by 10,000 sea creatures. It is, objectively, one of the coolest things any kid can do on their birthday.

During regular visiting hours, the aquarium offers plenty of hands-on moments: Touch a Ray Bay lets kids pet live stingrays, the glass-bottom boat ride glides over sharks and sea turtles, and live diving shows run throughout the day.

Best for: All ages — especially kids who love animals and ocean life Birthday tip: Book the party package well in advance; the shark sleepover dates fill up fast, especially during summer and school breaks.

2. Anakeesta — Best All-Day Birthday Adventure

📍 576 Parkway, Gatlinburg | 🕐 Open daily

Anakeesta is a must-do in Gatlinburg. You get amazing panoramic views over the Smoky Mountains, plus ziplining, a mountain coaster, hanging bridges, a children's village, restaurants, and s'mores by the fire in the evening — making it one of the few attractions that can anchor an entire birthday day without anyone getting bored.

The headliner for older kids is the Rail Runner Mountain Coaster — riders 3 and up can board and reach speeds up to 30 mph while shooting down the mountain.

Age and height requirements for the Rail Runner Mountain Coaster: single riders must be 7+ and at least 48 inches tall; passengers must be between 3–7 years old and at least 38 inches tall.

Younger kids have the Chondola Village with a dedicated children's play area, tree houses, and gem mining — a perennial birthday favorite where kids sift through sand to find real gemstones they get to keep. The dueling ziplines work for adventurous kids and adults alike, and the Treetop Skywalk suspended bridges give everyone a gentle thrill.

If you're inviting a larger group for the birthday celebration, Anakeesta offers group pricing that can make the per-person cost very reasonable.

Best for: Ages 3 and up; wide range of activity levels makes it ideal for mixed-age groups Birthday tip: Go on a weekday if possible and arrive at opening to hit the mountain coaster before lines build. Plan for a full day — most families spend 4–6 hours.

3. Ober Mountain — Year-Round Thrills for Every Age

📍 1339 Ski Mountain Rd, Gatlinburg | 🕐 Open daily year-round

Ober Mountain in Gatlinburg is a mountaintop playground packed with family-friendly activities year-round. Getting there is half the fun — ride the iconic aerial tramway from downtown Gatlinburg and enjoy beautiful views of the Smokies on the way up.

Once you're at the top, there's something for every age and season. In winter, families can hit the slopes for skiing, snowboarding, or snow tubing. Little ones can play in the dedicated Snow Zone. When the snow melts, the fun continues with summer tubing, the alpine slide, and the Ski Mountain Coaster. Kids love the ice bumper cars and indoor ice skating rink, while the Wildlife Encounter offers a chance to see native animals up close.

The Wildlife Encounter is a standout for animal-loving birthday kids — resident black bears, river otters, and other native Smoky Mountain animals in an up-close viewing habitat. Between the tramway ride, the coaster, the animals, and the ice skating, a birthday at Ober Mountain is a full-day adventure with something new around every corner.

Best for: All ages; ice skating and wildlife viewing work for very young kids; coaster and tubing for older ones Birthday tip: The aerial tramway is the main entrance — parking is free at the base station on Parkway. Combo tickets that bundle multiple activities offer the best value.

4. Ripley's Mountain Coaster

📍 386 Parkway, Gatlinburg | 🕐 Open daily

Ripley's Mountain Coaster goes over 30 miles per hour as you whizz through the mountains. Feel the breeze on your face as you zip along the track and enjoy beautiful views all around you. There's free parking and a restroom onsite, as well as a gift shop to pick up a souvenir.

Unlike a traditional roller coaster where the speed is fixed, the Ripley's Mountain Coaster lets riders control their own pace — push the brake lever to slow down, release it to zoom. That control element makes it genuinely accessible for younger riders who might be nervous, while still delivering the thrill older kids are after.

The souvenir photo at the bottom is a staple birthday memory — every kid leaves with proof of their bravest moment of the day.

Best for: Ages 3 and up (with an adult); solo riders must meet height requirements — check current requirements on the Ripley's website Birthday tip: Night rides are available and add a completely different, more thrilling dimension to the experience — a great option for older kids celebrating an evening birthday.

5. Gatlinburg SkyPark

📍 765 Parkway, Gatlinburg | 🕐 Open daily

Kids may not care that the SkyBridge is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in North America — but they will absolutely care that they're walking across a glass floor with a 500-foot drop visible beneath their feet. The SkyPark is a great way to soak in gorgeous views and get fresh mountain air, and for kids with a sense of adventure, it delivers a genuine adrenaline moment that most adults underestimate until they're standing on the glass.

The ride up on the iconic yellow chairlift is itself a birthday-worthy moment — an open-air chair ascending through the treetops with Gatlinburg shrinking below. Add the SkyTrail hiking path, Clayton's Landing overlook, and the Smoky Mountain Smash restaurant at the summit, and you've got a solid half-day birthday outing.

Best for: Ages 4 and up; all ages ride the chairlift (3 and under free); the glass floor panels are optional for nervous kids Birthday tip: Buy tickets online in advance to skip the ticket line. The SkyPass is worth it if you want to ride up at opening and again at sunset for two completely different views.
