Top 4 Winter Trails to Hike Near Our Pigeon Forge Cabins

When you stay at a Pigeon Forge cabin this winter, you’re always close to a spectacular hike. Take your pick of trails where frost glitters on the trees and waterfalls turn into magical ice palaces! These four trails give you the best of the Smokies in winter.

Before setting out, remember to check road and trail conditions online. Dress in layers. Wear hiking boots appropriate for snow and ice. Start early, so you have more daylight for hiking. Ready? Head for one of these top trails.

1. Porters Creek Trail

When other trails are too icy or steep in winter, choose family-friendly Porters Creek Trail. The first mile is a flat, gravel road, leading through a forest where you might spy deer and foxes. You’ll spot a cemetery, old homesteads, and a waterfall.

Start at Greenbrier Cove trailhead for a 3.7-mile hike along the nearly flat trail. You can continue hiking for a 7-mile trek to see views of Mount LeConte.

2. Metcalf Bottoms Trail

This 1.5-mile round trip trail is easy, but that doesn’t mean it’s boring. This is one of the best trails for exploring the legacy of the area’s European settlers: You’ll discover homesteads, a historic cemetery, and an 1882 log cabin that served as both schoolhouse and church.

The trailhead is close to Metcalf Bottoms picnic area on Little River Gorge Road. The dirt path is good for walking, but roots make it too difficult for strollers or wheelchairs.

3. Laurel Falls Trail

In summer and fall, Laurel Falls Trail is one of the most popular, crowded, trails here. Winter is your chance to make the four-mile round trip in peace, reveling in the quiet. The big payoff for your chilly hike is the view of ice formations clinging to the 80-foot-high waterfall.

The 2.6-mile round trip trail begins at Fighting Creek Gap Road trailhead. This trail is fairly flat and rated an easy hike.

4. Alum Cave Trail

Cold days after winter snows are when Alum Cave Trail truly shines. Winter weather creates breathtaking icicles hanging from Alum Cave’s bluffs. Along the way, you’ll hike through majestic old-growth forests.

The trail runs five miles out and back, but be aware of what you’re getting into. Alum Cave Trail is steep, and rated “strenuous” by hiking guides. The trailhead is on Newfound Gap Road.

Reserve your Pigeon Forge cabin now, and enjoy a warm, cozy home base for your winter hikes!
