Kuwohi

Kuwohi (formerly known as Clingmans Dome) is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park—soaring to an elevation of 6,643 feet—and ranks as both the highest spot in Tennessee and the third-highest summit east of the Mississippi River. Accessible via a scenic 7-mile road from Newfound Gap, a paved, yet steep, half-mile trail leads to a distinctive observation tower offering breathtaking 360° views that can extend over 100 miles on clear days. Officially renamed “Kuwohi”—meaning “mulberry place” in Cherokee—in 2024, this sacred summit carries deep cultural significance for the Cherokee people and stands as a powerful symbol of heritage and healing.
