Make memories to treasure forever, when you explore these beloved spots in the Smoky Mountains. Get outside with family and friends, while summer’s still here!
1. Old-Fashioned Swimming Holes
Cool off with a dip in a clear river. Try the swimming holes at Greenbrier Cove, Townsend Wye, or Metcalf Bottoms. Bring inner tubes so you can float dreamily on the water.
2. Fishing Streams
The national park has nearly 3,000 miles of rivers and streams, so you’re sure to find a secluded spot for hours of fishing (or dozing!), surrounded by nature. Got kids? Gatlinburg is home to three catch-and-release fishing streams exclusively for children.
3. Picnic Spots
For waterside picnics, head to Metcalf Bottoms, next to the river, or Chimney Tops, with views of a picturesque stream. With 11 picnic areas to choose from, the national park has plenty of idyllic places to eat, all with tables. Some spots have grills and group pavilions, too.
4. The House of the Fairies
Hike through lush woods to find this hidden gem. Imagine you’re the first ones to discover the moss-covered stone doorway set in a hillside! This mysterious spot is an old springhouse, but don’t tell the kids that. Let them come up with their own stories about this unexpected little building!
5. Cades Cove
Long summer days give you more time to explore this peaceful valley’s historic churches, barns, and cabins. Stroll the nature trail or go horseback riding at the park stables. Wildlife is abundant here, with deer, raccoons, hawks, and wild turkeys. If you’re lucky and eagle-eyed, you might spot otters or bears.
6. Grotto Falls
Experience Grotto Falls, the only waterfall in the Smokies where you can walk behind the cascade. Feel the thrill as a crashing wall of water thunders down, just feet away from you! Hike to the falls along an easy section of Trillium Gap Trail. Be sure your phone’s charged. You’ll want plenty of selfies here.
7. Your Beautiful Cabin
Too wet or hot outside to fish, hike, or swim? Make memories indoors, at your Smokies cabin rental. Soak in the hot tub. Shoot pool, or play air hockey or foosball, in the game room. Some cabins boast indoor pools or in-cabin movie theaters.
Reserve a Smokies cabin and start your summer adventure now.
