About the Lightning Rod Roller Coaster at Dollywood
Published Sep 4, 2023Does the thought of blazing speed thrill you? Do breathtaking drops and heart-pounding turns sound like your idea of heaven? Hop aboard Lightning Rod, a roller coaster like no other! See why coaster lovers can’t get enough of Dollywood’s beloved retro-themed ride.
Fastest and First
At its debut in 2016, Lightning Rod was the fastest wooden coaster in the world, with speeds topping out at a dazzling 73 mph. It’s still one of the fastest coasters around today, as a hybrid coaster of wood and steel.
Lightning Rod was the first wooden coaster anywhere to use a launch system–for a speedier start, right out of the gate–instead of an old-fashioned chain lift to pull cars uphill. When it comes to building rides with the latest technology, Dollywood doesn’t mess around!
Vintage Fun
Step into the lively 1950s at Dollywood’s Jukebox Junction. You can’t miss the nostalgic entrance to this popular coaster. Look for the retro gas station, with red steel gas pumps, gleaming chrome, and neon trim aglow after dark!
True to Dollywood’s attention to detail, Lightning Rod isn’t just a ride, it’s an immersive experience. Your path to the coaster is through Johnny Rev’s incredible garage. Find details everywhere you look! Spot the top secret plans for new hot rods, peek into the welding shop, and see the custom hot rod shop.
The whole time, you’re getting closer to your personal “hot rod,” the coaster itself. Don’t forget to take a look at the coaster’s front car, styled like a souped-up 1950s roadster, complete with a fabulous flame paint design!
A Wild Ride
Your 12-car coaster train pulls up to the platform. Time to go hot rodding in midair. Do you dare ride in front? You’ve got 3,800 feet of track ahead of you!
Get ready to burst out of the launch going zero-to-45 mph in an instant, and zooming up more than 20 stories high! You’ll hit airtime on this first hill, so hang on! Double hills bump you up into the air again before the breathtaking first drop–a 165-foot plunge reaching 73 mph. Expect steep turns, snaps to the left and right and four dramatic drops in a row before the finale turns you around 180 degrees.
