7 Tips for Skiing in the Smoky Mountains

7 Tips for Skiing in the Smoky Mountains

Hit the slopes in Tennessee’s Smoky Mountains this winter! Whether you’re a black diamond skier or a newcomer to the bunny trails, you’ll feel at home. Use these handy tips for easier, safer skiing in the Smokies.

1. There’s only one ski resort in Tennessee, and Gatlinburg’s got it.

For the ease of resort skiing, complete with equipment rentals, chairlifts, food, and drink, head for Ober Mountain. Ober’s about more than ski runs, too. You can ice skate, go snow tubing, ride ice bumper cars, and more.

2. You can ski cross-country in the national park.

When snow closes roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, skiers turn those roads into cross-country routes. The road to Kuwohi (formerly Clingmans Dome) is especially suited to skiing. Kuwohi, the highest point in Tennessee, gets an average of 84 inches of snow each year, turning the seven-mile access road into a thickly blanketed ski trail.

3. Check weather and road reports before you set out.

Mountain weather changes quickly. Use your favorite weather site or app for the latest reports. Check the Great Smoky Mountains National Park website for last-minute closures and park-specific weather warnings.

4. Wear the right gear.

Winter temperatures can vary from 20 degrees to 60 degrees, so dress in layers you can peel off as needed. Don’t forget snow boots, goggles, gloves, a hat, and a face mask. You’ll want to stay outside longer if your face isn’t numb!

5. Don’t depend on your phone for maps.

If you’re skiing cross-country in the park, be aware that phone service in the mountains can be spotty. If you rely on your phone for maps, GPS, or calls, it might let you down. Carry old-school maps if you’ll be adventuring on remote roads.

6. Can’t ski? Or just want something different? Try these!

Go snowboarding or snow tubing at Ober. Rent snowshoes from an outfitter like REI in Pigeon Forge and head into the national park. For a unique snow day, go tubing indoors on real snow, in 60-degree temperatures, at Pigeon Forge Snow.

7. Spend your time on your skis, not in your car.

Vacation time is precious. Don’t waste it driving long distances to ski. Stay close to Ober and the national park by choosing a Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge cabin rental. Browse our cabins now, to find your perfect base for a ski getaway!
