1. Major Expansion at Anakeesta Theme Park
Mountaintop theme park Anakeesta plans its largest additions ever. Plan your Gatlinburg vacation and take in these nature-themed attractions:
- Birdventure Takes Flight
At BirdVenture, kids of all ages imagine life as a bird in the Smokies. Clamber around three enormous birdhouses, romp in 12 adventure zones, and experience seven giant serpentine slides that twist more than 50 feet downhill. Anakeesta will be the only place in the country where you can try these unique serpentine slides!
- Ride the Newest Mountain Coaster
Hellbender is Anakeesta’s new mountain coaster, named for one of the Smokies’ colorful, slippery salamanders. Glide and slide through the forest, zipping around turns and through tunnels full of surprises.
- Explore Waterfalls and Caves
Anakeesta already bursts with gardens and water features, and doubles down on that natural beauty with new, interactive waterfall features. Stroll behind a waterfall’s rushing cascade and feel its cool spray, then explore caves echoing the caves of the Smokies.
- Escape to Europe
Throughout 2023 the park is developing a quaint, European-themed village, including the park’s largest retail area. Spring sees the opening of Mimi’s Bakery, where French pastries, sweets and savory treats are a Parisian delight. In keeping with Anakeesta’s focus on nature, expect this beautiful village to glow with warm wood and local stone.
2. Dollywood Debuts Its Longest Coaster
Gatlinburg is just down the road from Dollywood, so it’s a short drive to 2023’s new roller coaster, Big Bear Mountain. This sprawling ride will be the longest coaster in Dollywood’s history! Riders will fly over nearly 4,000 feet of track at speeds close to 50 miles an hour, winding around the theme park’s Wildwood Grove.
