Chimney Tops Trail

One of the most iconic and challenging hikes in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the Chimney Tops Trail begins along Newfound Gap Road about seven miles past the Sugarlands Visitor Center. From the trailhead, you’ll hike 0.9 miles to the intersection with Road Prong Trail. Turn left to continue toward Chimney Tops, making the full out-and-back journey approximately 4 miles roundtrip.
This steep and strenuous climb rewards hikers with breathtaking views and a close look at the trail’s famous twin rock spires, which rise to an elevation of 4,755 feet. The dramatic peaks and sweeping mountain vistas make this one of the most photographed and talked-about hikes in the Smokies.
Because of its rocky terrain and creek crossings, the trail can be slippery, especially in the spring. Sturdy hiking shoes are essential, and children should be kept close at all times. With the right preparation, Chimney Tops offers an unforgettable adventure and some of the most impressive views in the park.
