Kuwohi Trail

Rising to 6,643 feet, Kuwohi is the highest point in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the highest point in Tennessee. Located along the Tennessee and North Carolina state line, this mountaintop destination offers some of the most expansive views in the region. Visitors reach the summit by driving Kuwohi Road from Newfound Gap Road, then walking the paved, half-mile Kuwohi Trail to the top. The trail leads to a 54-foot observation tower where sweeping mountain vistas stretch in every direction.
Kuwohi is also a significant landmark along the Appalachian Trail, marking the highest elevation point along the trail’s 2,144-mile journey. On a clear day, visitors can see up to 100 miles across the surrounding landscape. Some even say you can spot portions of seven states from the summit, including Tennessee, North Carolina, Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky, and Alabama.
While the walk to the top is paved and accessible, it is steep. The short climb gains 332 feet in elevation, with an average grade of nearly 13 percent. Benches are thoughtfully placed along the way, giving you a chance to rest and take in the scenery before continuing upward. The paved surface makes it manageable for many families, including those with strollers or mobility devices, but the incline should not be underestimated.
Kuwohi Trail also connects with Forney Creek Trail and Forney Ridge Trail, offering alternative routes for experienced hikers who prefer to reach the summit without using the main parking area. Keep in mind that Kuwohi Road is typically closed from December 1 through March 31, so access during winter months may require additional planning. No matter the season, the panoramic views from Kuwohi make it one of the most unforgettable experiences in the Smokies.
