5 Things to Avoid When Visiting Gatlinburg
Published Feb 18, 2022To get the best out of a visit to Gatlinburg, there are some things you definitely should avoid doing if you want a stress-free trip!
1. Visiting at Peak Season
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited national park in America and Gatlinburg is a tourist magnet! Plan accordingly when visiting in July and August, when family vacations peak, and in October, when fall foliage brings tourists. Many attractions are open year-round so you don’t have to come in only the summer to have fun. Leaves change colors from September into November, so you have plenty of time for viewing the beautiful fall foliage on either side of the October peak times.
2. Drinking Like an Amateur
There’s a strong allure to a drink once famed for being illegally cooked up in backwoods stills. Today’s legal moonshine draws folks wanting to taste what all the fuss is about. Bear in mind: It’s strong stuff. Most are about 40 percent alcohol by volume but some versions go as high as 80 percent. To enjoy your tasting rather than regretting it, remember: Eat first. Go tasting with others. Don’t hit too many distilleries in one day.
3. Missing Out on Cabin Amenities
It’s up to you to take advantage of the great amenities your cabin offers. Do you get access to a community pool? Don’t forget to bring swimsuits. Never tried a hot tub? They’re easier to operate than you might think. Don’t know how to play pool so you haven’t touched the cabin’s pool table? Why not look up some how-to videos and grab a cue?
4. Being Unprepared for the Mountains
With more than 800 miles of trails, the national park offers everything from easy paths to challenging climbs. Enjoy, but don’t be “that” tourist who ends up needing rescue.
Check the weather. Wear layers because temperatures can vary by as much as 20 degrees on the same mountain. Bring water. Don’t hike or walk alone. Don’t depend on your phone because you might not get a signal in the mountains. Tell someone where you’re going and when you expect to return.
5. Getting Too Close to Wildlife
You’re sure to spot animals like the iconic black bear, deer, elk, and coyotes. Keep your distance no matter what you see. That cub or fawn that looks abandoned likely has a mama nearby! It’s illegal to feed, touch, or get within 50 yards of wildlife in the park.
One thing you should never avoid is Gatlinburg hospitality. It’s the best. Find out by reserving your rental cabin today.
